Q: Can I directly hire architects, engineers and contractors for my department projects?
A: No, and construction professional services require a contract through Capital Project Management (CPM) regardless of dollar value or scope of work. Our U Construction project managers work directly with CPM on behalf of the projects we manage.
Q: How is project funding managed and what happens to remaining funds at the end of the project?
A: Project managers closely monitor customer-approved funds to ensure fiscal responsibility. Any remaining funds are returned to the source account at the project’s end, two to three months after work is complete. If project expenses exceed the funded amount, project managers will request additional funds to cover the variance. U Construction bills on a time & material basis.
Q: Are the construction trades professionals employees of the University of Minnesota?
A: Yes, in most cases the construction trades working on projects are employed by the University, however in some cases U Construction will hire external contractors and consultants to supplement our available project resources.
