Training and Professional Development

Dear FM,

Happy New Year! This is my first Bill’s Bi-Weekly since the holidays, so I will begin by wishing you a happy New Year and hoping you had a nice holiday break. The beginning of the new year is a time when we often make resolutions and set goals for ourselves. Whether you are thinking about your personal goals (Wellness program, perhaps?) or work related goals, it is a good time for reflection on what is important for the upcoming calendar year. One area I’d like to highlight today fits into both the personal and work realms - our training and professional development program.   

Training and Professional Development

I am happy to report that we are making progress in our effort to develop and deploy training classes for FM. As you may recall, last summer we launched our skill-based training program focusing on mechanics. So far we have rolled out courses in reading building plans and mechanical drawings, troubleshooting HVAC systems, and water purity systems training. We are excited to continue developing classes for mechanics including compressed air systems troubleshooting and managing customer relationships.

We are also excited to introduce classes for Sr. Building & Grounds Supervisors, which we are developing now and will roll out during 2019. Some topics will include: operational structure and efficiency, administering labor contracts, and systems and technology training. Special thanks to our subject matter experts, Jerry Busse, Mike Hofer, Senay Emnetu, Meagan Schumann, and Karen Wallin, who are working with our Training and Development Consultant Lolita Johnson, to develop the Sr. B&G Supervisor training classes.

Reviewing training needs comprehensively by position takes a lot of time! I will continue to update you on our focus and status as we progress over the next several years. We will be creating some programs as well as using pre-existing programs when readily available. I believe that a focused training program will benefit employees for their own development and make our department more efficient and productive.

Respectful Workplace Training

Creating a welcoming culture where everyone matters is core to FM and to the University. I am pleased to announce that FM launched respectful workplace training on January 3. The respectful workplace training is a mandatory, one-hour, in-person training developed by University Services Human Resources, and it is being implemented across all of U-Services. District custodial teams will be the first to complete the training. The goal is to have all FM employees attend the training by May 30, 2019.  Stay tuned for additional information, and thanks in advance for your participation and engagement on this very important topic.

Gopher Football Team Sends its Thanks to FM

One of the ways we accomplish our mission of making the campus welcoming is through building great relationships with our customers and our teams. As one example, our North Campus team spends a lot of time taking care of the new athletes village, and working with their staff. We were delighted that each Gopher football player wrote a personal thank you note to North Campus staff to show appreciation for how well they are taking care of the athletics facilities.

Check out these opportunities to earn up to 300 Wellbeing Points

Depending on your coverage, you can save either $500 (self or self/children) or $750 (employee and spouse with/without children) on your health insurance premiums in 2020 by earning your Wellbeing Points. These two options are a great way to start earning points:

Biometric Screening - 150 points

Boynton Health scheduled biometric screenings for second and third shift employees on 2/20 from 8:30-10:30p.m. at Boynton and on 2/21 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at St. Paul Student Center. Check with your supervisor to sign up. You may also sign up for an alternate time through Boynton Health or get the screening from your doctor - just ask them to complete this form.

Four Cornerstones of Financial Literacy  Courses - 150 points

Benefits is offering the financial literacy courses for FM staff. Courses are on January 16, January 23, January 30, and February 6 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the Health Sciences Conference Room (Mayo C-170). You must attend all four sessions to earn the points. Recognize and Report Fraud and Scams

Scams increase during tax-time nationwide; be cautious with suspicious emails or phone calls. Learn more about the different types of scams, how to protect yourself against tax fraud, and how to report scams to the University.

I hope you all had a relaxing 4th of July holiday and had a chance to spend some time with family and friends. July 1st marks the beginning of our new fiscal year; the fiscal year (FY) is the financial timeframe in which we set and manage our budgets, and our fiscal years run from July 1- June 30. If you thought 2019 was already passing too quickly, let me welcome you to FY 2020.    

Cleaning over 7,000 sinks, toilets and urinals takes skill and commitment from our dedicated co-workers. Each day a proper procedure is performed in the restrooms to clean from least contaminated (sink/vanity area) to more contaminated (toilet/urinal area) to provide a safe facility for students, staff and visitors. Every year our custodial co-workers install 9,000 paper towel rolls and over 23,000 rolls of toilet tissue!
