Thank you to our Veterans!
On Wednesday this week we celebrate and honor America’s veterans for their service and sacrifice for our country. To all who have served our great Nation, we say thank you! To learn more about Veteran’s day and the history of it, click on the image below.
Last week was an eventful week in an eventful 2020. In the interest of making things simple when possible, today’s message focuses on a couple quick hits and notes for the week.
Bonding Bill Passed - Projects on the Horizon
As you have heard, the Minnesota House and Senate passed a $1.36 billion bonding bill, including over $75 million for University of Minnesota priorities. And of that over $27 million in Higher Education Asset Preservation & Replacement (HEAPR) funding is for the Twin Cities campus, with these projects prioritized so far:
final phase of Mechanical Engineering capital upgrades
roof replacements for Biosystems & Ag Eng, Children’s Rehab, Haeker Hall, and Ted Mann
accessibility restroom upgrades for Animal Science/Vet Med
While this is well short of our total requested funds, these investments are critical for us to provide a campus that is safe, reliable and welcoming, and we appreciate the support from our state legislature.

Taking COVID-19 Precautions is Taking Care of Yourself and Loved Ones
2020 has been exhausting. However, due to COVID-19 cases rising in FM and hitting record highs in our state, across the country and worldwide, now is not the time to relax on keeping yourself and your loved ones protected from COVID-19. In the latest episode of the Osterholm Update: A New Dialogue, the U’s own Dr. Michael Osterholm, Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, discusses record-breaking case numbers in the US, public trust in science amid the COVID-19 pandemic, expectations for vaccines, more details related to bubbling, and the risks associated with gatherings. Osterholm talks about simply getting through this season safely - and to do that, we may have to make some sacrifices to our normal routines, just as we have been doing, but even more diligently than ever.
As you go about your work this week, be thinking about that fact that you’d like to be well enough to continue to work, to plan for future holidays and events and spending time with your loved ones. Remember there is so much we CAN do to protect ourselves and others - stay apart, wear a mask, and wash our hands. It is very important that we all do our part to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Have a great week!
