Sustainable core principle #2: Creating sustainable food systems
Fall semester is well underway and we’d like to continue discussing the four core principles of the Office of Sustainability. As you may remember from our last blog, these four principles include the stewardship of water resources, creating sustainable food systems, maintaining clean energy and providing sustainable systems management. All of these topics are major priorities of the University and contribute to the overall sustainability of campus. We want to break these topics down to explain the meaning of each sector and why each of them matters to us.
The first topic discussed in the last blog was the stewardship of water resources. This time, we’re talking about the creation of sustainable food systems on campus. We can help to reduce food waste, advocate for local economies by shopping locally, and help to reduce the use of harmful chemicals that pollute our water. Beyond these broad ways of getting involved, you can volunteer at the on-campus farm or take a class to learn more about sustainable food systems.
There are so many ways to get involved in creating sustainable food systems that you probably didn’t know about—check them out!
- Shop local- supporting farmers stimulates the local economy and provides you with sourced produce. Most farmers exclude using chemicals on their produce too!
- Check out the on-campus Farmers Market
- Visit co-ops in the colder months to get fresh, local produce
- Volunteer at Cornercopia- The student farm, Cornercopia is located on the St. Paul campus and is always looking for new volunteers.
- Take classes and minors that will teach you more about sustainable food systems!
- Reduce waste associated with food- only buy as much as you will eat to reduce uneaten food and wasted packaging going into the landfill.
- Start a compost collection- Instead of sending organics to the landfill, get a compost bin from the city or start your own collection at home. Check out our composting seriesto learn more too!
