Sustainability highlight: Open Streets
Last Sunday, September 30th, Open Streets came to the University of Minnesota campus and the Motley neighborhood. Open Streets is a community event that closes streets to car traffic and opens it up for walking, biking and more! These events give the public the opportunity to explore their neighborhood safely while also getting to know local vendors.
Our office attended the event to talk to the public about sustainability. We walked up and down University Avenue and Oak Street giving away carrots from the 17thAvenue Residential Dining Hall to those in attendance. We also asked those that passed by the following questions:
- “What does sustainability mean to you?”
- “What changes would you like to see at the U in regards to sustainability?”
We received a lot of great responses and learned more about where we are and where we can go in terms of sustainability. Some of the common threads for improvement included organics recycling, dining hall food waste, and increasing renewable energy.
A recap video of the event is coming soon, so be sure to look out for it on our Facebook page.
