The Facilities Management Custodial Program is a large, in-house operation dedicated to cleaning the buildings and facilities of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. Custodial teams service 15 million square feet in nearly 200 buildings daily using sustainable equipment, products and practices. As stewards of public and student funds, the student experience is prioritized by scheduling more frequent service in common areas and classrooms. Our motto: See Dirt. Clean Dirt.
Custodial Services
Waste, Recycling, and Compost
Most campus buildings feature a Quad waste station--a single location with four bins:
- Mixed Paper
- Cans and Bottles (glass and plastic)
- Compostable Organics
- Trash
This system makes it easy for everyone to sort waste correctly and support our shared goal of Zero Waste.
Routine Cleaning
Our cleaning practices follow the Maroon Standard, which sets guidelines for what we clean and how often. Cleaning frequency depends on space usage, a method called condition-based cleaning. This approach helps us focus resources where they matter most, keeping facilities safe, reliable, and welcoming.
Deep Cleaning
Beyond routine tasks, our custodial teams perform deep cleaning activities throughout the year, including:
- Carpet pre-scrubbing and hot-water extraction
- Restroom machine scrubbing and pressure washing
- Hard floor refinishing
During school breaks, we deep clean classrooms, study areas, and residence halls to prepare for the next academic semester or year.
Snow and Ice
In winter, custodial teams clear snow and ice from building entrances up to the point where Landcare takes over. Exterior entrance areas are serviced by our custodial staff in the winter from the doors out to a line where the Landcare staff perform their services. We use Smart Salting practices, developed by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, to minimize salt use and protect the environment.
Lighting
Custodial teams are often the first to respond to burnt-out lights. If a bulb can be replaced safely with a standard ladder, we handle it. If the issue requires more than a simple replacement, we forward it to our maintenance team.
Special Projects
Our teams respond to water leaks and floods, assist with special events, and provide extra cleaning or construction cleanup to prepare new or renovated spaces for use.
Custodial services in supported buildings are funded from the University's cost pools. Non-support buildings, as well as extra services, are charged to departments on a time and materials basis.
